This Swiss-made rifle is a perfect combination of multiple weapons – featuring an M4/AR-style bolt handle, an M4-type pistol grip for Glock magazines, a telescopic stock, and the proven APC PRO design. It is a suitable solution for shooters who prefer the bolt handle to be located at the rear of the weapon's body.
The SPC9 series from B&T is a series of weapons with a hybrid design, widely requested by customers. These weapons are sometimes referred to as “Frankengun.” This is because they combine multiple functionalities and features found in different weapon systems developed worldwide.
An unnamed police department in Europe requested a 9mm carbine that would have controls and ergonomics identical to the AR platform. The reasons primarily revolved around cost savings – the classic 9mm ammunition is indeed cheaper compared to .300 AAC or 5.56 caliber bullets. Additionally, the police shooting range had a bullet trap that was not designed for rifle ammunition.
Some of the SPC9 weapon features are time-tested – such as the three-lug barrel attachment. Such a solution can be found in the most popular submachine guns in the world, for which B&T has been manufacturing suppressors for almost three decades. The manufacturer uses this system because it considers it the best available mounting system for suppressors on 9mm semi-automatic rifles.
An interesting feature of this particular type of SPC9 weapon is the mentioned suppressor, whose rear part simply “fits” into the forearm, while the massive profiled front part extends the barrel length. With a higher diameter at the end, this suppressor optimally dampens the noise during shooting – after all, that is its intended purpose.
Some weapons of this type have significantly higher recoil than the B&T SPC9 SD PDW G. This is because at the end of the barrel of this weapon (which is surprisingly light and compact), there is an innovative hydraulic recoil buffer that can significantly reduce recoil.
The advantage is two bolt handle systems. One of them, the rear one, is taken from the AR platform, and the front one might be familiar from the APC9 models. In both cases, it is an ambidextrous solution, appreciated by both right and left-handed users. After all, the designer of this weapon is sensitive to such matters because he is left-handed himself.
Another plus of the B&T SPC9 platform is compatibility with any 9mm Glock magazine. This offers users flexibility, cost savings, and also the possibility of mutual assistance among comrades.
The telescopic stock and handle of the SPC9 rifle were taken from the classic AR platform. The stock can be adjusted to six positions and can be replaced with any other AR-type stock on the market. The pistol grip, originally manufactured by B&T, can also be replaced with aftermarket solutions from companies like Magpul, BCM, and others.
The rifle is equipped with both NAR and M-LOK systems for mounting accessories such as lighting or optics. NAR systems are placed at twelve and six o'clock, while the M-LOK rail is on the side. The SPC9 rifle comes with one M-LOK rail, but additional ones can be added optionally.
The pistol grip of the SPC9 rifle is taken from the popular APC9 series, which incidentally won the US Army's competition for a new-generation subcompact weapon (SCW). The grip is compatible with reliable polymer magazines from B&T. In another configuration, the pistol grip can be equipped with the previously mentioned Glock magazines.
The SPC series rifles are standardly supplied with Aimpoint T-Series optics on a 39mm extension and mount. Thanks to a specially designed lighting system, the commonly used batteries in the optics need to be changed approximately every five years. Besides the optical solution itself, the package also includes flip-up metal sights.
There are also other unique features that are not visible at first glance, such as the cold-forged barrel construction that offers excellent shooting accuracy. The “European” trigger system also allows the weapon to be secured with the hammer forward during the handling process. Moreover, the trigger system is two-stage. The weapon can also be supplied with a 10-round magazine.
