Summer offers many advantages. The weather is warm, we can swim and sleep outdoors, carry fewer layers on our trips, and enjoy the countryside in full bloom. However, it also has at least one drawback—annoying and sometimes dangerous insects.
If you head outdoors between spring and autumn, you will probably enjoy the warmer weather that most people associate with positive experiences. Unfortunately, it also brings insects. As long as they keep to themselves, there is little reason for concern. But once they begin buzzing around you day and night, biting, stinging, and feeding on your blood, it is time to take effective protective measures.
Insects, including mosquitoes and ticks, are a natural part of the outdoors, just like predators and other potential hazards. Anyone who spends time in the backcountry must learn to coexist with them. However, when swarms of mosquitoes surround you throughout the evening or you remove several ticks after a 20-kilometre hike, they become a genuine health concern. Fortunately, several effective and humane forms of insect protection are available.
Insect repellent can protect you from ticks and other unwanted insects while hiking. Applied to the skin or clothing as a spray, lotion, or similar product, it contains substances that deter specific insect species. Depending on the formulation, repellents can provide long-lasting protection and significantly reduce contact with mosquitoes and deer keds—the winged insects sometimes mistaken for flying ticks. They can also help protect against conventional ticks.
A spatial insect repellent can provide even greater protection against persistent insects. Thermacell devices, for example, use the synthetic active ingredient d-allethrin. This substance is modelled on pyrethrin, a naturally occurring insecticidal compound found in pyrethrum daisies. It repels mosquitoes and various other insects.
When activated, the device creates an invisible zone around the user in which mosquitoes are effectively repelled. The mats containing the active ingredient have a limited service life, but replacement refills are available, allowing the device to provide protection over a much longer period.
Mosquito nets provide a physical barrier against insects. Their fine mesh prevents mosquitoes and similar pests from reaching the user. Some nets are designed to cover only the head while walking or sleeping, while larger versions can protect an entire hammock, camp bed, or even a double bed. Suspend the net above your sleeping area and it can keep mosquitoes away throughout the night.
