When a certain police department was looking for a 9 mm carbine with similar operational characteristics and ergonomics as the AR platform through a tender, B&T was clear. They introduced the SPC9 series, which combines the advantages of their APC9 platform with the MP5 and AR platforms. The new series is lightweight, reliable, balanced, accurate, safe, and modular.
The PDW G variant, like all other weapons from the B&T SPC9 series, boasts a hybrid design, which is very popular among customers. Some have even started calling this series the Frankengun because it combines different functionalities and elements that one would otherwise find in various weapon systems from around the world.
An unnamed European police department issued a tender for a 9 mm carbine that would be comparable in operation and ergonomics to the AR platform. The reasons included financial ones, as the 9 mm cartridge is significantly cheaper compared to .300 AAC or 5.56 cartridges. Another reason was the bullet trap at the local police firing range, which was not designed for regular rifle ammunition.
Some features of the SPC9 rifles are time-tested. This includes the three-lug barrel attachment, a solution used in popular semi-automatic rifles. B&T has been manufacturing suppressors for these for almost thirty years. The manufacturer explained the use of this solution as it is considered the best mounting system for suppressors on 9 mm semi-automatic rifles.
The B&T SPC9 PDW G rifle has very low recoil. The main reason is the innovative hydraulic recoil buffer located at the end of the firearm barrel. It significantly reduces the level of recoil despite the firearm being surprisingly lightweight and compact.
The rifle features two different systems for charging the action. It has both a front and rear charging handle, with the first being taken from the B&T APC9 rifles and the second from the AR platform. In both cases, the operation of the charging handle is ambidextrous, suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users. In fact, the designer of this weapon series is left-handed.
If you install the appropriate pistol grip on the SPC9 platform (see below), these rifles become compatible with all 9 mm Glock magazines. This increases flexibility and brings the possibility of interoperability between fellow fighters. Additionally, it can save costs on armament.
The telescopic stock and grip of the SPC9 rifle are taken from the classic AR platform. The stock has six positions and can be replaced with any other AR stock available on the market. The pistol grip is also interchangeable. The SPC9 is standardly equipped with a pistol grip from the Swiss B&T, but it can be replaced with solutions from companies like Magpul, BCM, and others.
You can purchase various universal accessories for the rifle. Lighting, aiming devices, and other optics and accessories can be mounted on the SPC9 platform thanks to the NAR and M-LOK mounting systems. The NAR systems are situated at the twelve and six o'clock positions and the M-LOK rails are on the sides. The SPC9 rifle comes with one M-LOK rail as standard, but you can add more.
In addition to other features, the SPC9 rifle inherits the pistol grip from the popular APC9 series. The APC9 series, among other things, won the US Army tender for a next-generation subcompact weapon (SCW). The SPC9's pistol grip is compatible with B&T's polymer magazines, renowned for their reliability. In another configuration, you can combine the pistol grip with Glock magazines.
In the standard version, you receive Aimpoint T-Series optics with a 39 mm spacer and mount for the SPC9 series rifles. The illumination of the optics is designed so that commonly used batteries need to be replaced only once every approximately five years of operation. Along with the Aimpoint T-Series, you also get cooperating flip-up metal sights.
Other practical features worth mentioning are not immediately obvious. Specifically, this includes the construction of the barrel, which is cold-forged, ensuring very accurate shooting. The two-stage trigger system operates according to European standards, allowing the weapon to be secured even with the hammer forward during handling.
