The Swiss company B&T developed a range of 9 mm semi-automatic rifles, the SPC9, in response to a tender by a certain European police agency. The requirement was: a 9 mm carbine with operating characteristics and ergonomics similar to the AR platform (reasons outlined below). The SPC9 series can be described as lightweight, reliable, balanced, accurate, safe, and modular.
The G variant, like all other weapons in the SPC9 series from B&T, boasts a hybrid design that is very popular among customers. This type of weapon has even earned the nickname Frankengun because it combines functionalities and elements that would otherwise be found in various types of weapons from around the world.
Why did the mentioned European police agency issue a tender for a 9 mm carbine similar to the AR platform? There were two reasons. The first was the cost of ammunition, as the 9 mm variant is certainly cheaper than the .300 AAC or 5.56 calibers. At the same time, standard police shooting ranges were equipped with bullet traps not designed for standard rifle ammunition, but only for pistol ammunition.
Features of the SPC9 rifles, such as the triple-lug barrel mount, are time-tested. This solution is used in some popular semi-automatic rifles for which Swiss B&T has been producing suppressors for nearly 30 years. The manufacturer claims to use it because it is, in their opinion, the best mounting system available for suppressors on 9 mm semi-automatic rifles.
Thanks to its construction, the B&T SPC9 G rifle has a low level of perceived recoil. This is primarily due to the innovative hydraulic recoil buffer at the end of the barrel. This buffer significantly reduces the level of recoil, even though the weapon is surprisingly lightweight and compact.
The SPC9 G rifle is equipped with two different charging handle systems. It includes both a front and rear charging handle, with the former borrowed from the B&T APC9 rifles and the latter from the AR platform. In both cases, the operation of the charging handle is ambidextrous, making it suitable for both right and left-handed users. This is partly because the designer of this weapon series is left-handed.
If you combine the SPC9 platform with the appropriate pistol grip, it automatically becomes compatible with all Glock magazines in 9 mm caliber. This increases flexibility and ensures greater interoperability among soldiers. Moreover, this solution can potentially save expenses on armament.
Some elements of the SPC9 rifle, such as the telescopic stock and grip, were borrowed from the classic AR platform. The stock is six-position adjustable and replaceable with any other AR stock available on the market. You can also replace the standard pistol grip, which comes directly from Swiss B&T, with options from companies like Magpul, BCM, and others.
Lighting, sights, and other optics and accessories for the rifle can be chosen quite universally, thanks to the combination of NAR and M-LOK mounting systems available for the SPC9 platform. NAR systems are located at the twelve and six o'clock positions on the weapon, and the M-LOK rail can be found on the side. The basic version of the SPC9 rifles comes with one M-LOK rail, but you can add more.
One of the most popular series from the Swiss company B&T is the APC9, from which the SPC9 rifle has borrowed, among other things, the pistol grip. The APC9 series also won the U.S. Army tender for subcompact weapon (SCW) supply. The SPC9 pistol grip is compatible with B&T polymer magazines, renowned for their reliability. Another configuration offers a combination with Glock magazines.
The standard accessory for the SPC9 rifle series is the Aimpoint T-Series optics on a 39 mm mount and holder. The optics are illuminated so that the lighting battery only needs to be changed once every five years or so. Besides the Aimpoint T-Series optics, you also get folding metal sights that work with it.
We must mention other practical details that aren't immediately visible. Specifically, the barrel, which is cold-forged, ensuring high accuracy during shooting. The trigger system is two-stage and operates according to European standards. This means the weapon can be safely secured even with the hammer forward during the operation process.
