Two solutions in one

The main advantage of the plate carrier is that it combines the benefits of a tactical vest and a bulletproof vest. In earlier times, the bulletproof (ballistic) vest was the main protection against gunshot and stab wounds, while soldiers still sometimes wore a tactical vest. But such a solution used to be quite impractical - because it was bulky, heavy and it was very difficult to move around in the whole uniform (we fortunately haven't experienced it anymore, but some former soldiers of the People's Army could tell stories, and they are quite fond of telling them).

Subsequently, someone had the idea to combine both types of vests into one. Well, that's how the plate carrier came into being. It's definitely worth mentioning that most of the time you can wear the plate carrier as a regular tactical vest. And only in situations where you find yourself on the front line you simply insert compatible ballistic plates into the plate carrier. So you only add extra weight when it's really necessary and the situation calls for it.

Focused on modularity

On the tactical side, the charm of the plate carrier lies primarily in its modularity. In fact, the vast majority of these pieces of tactical gear are MOLLE/PALS compatible. This makes it possible (and indeed necessary) to carry only the equipment you really need at the time and in the mission. You can choose the specific plate carrier that's perfect for you based on the product descriptions. Of course, it also depends on your preference of brand, but also on what extra accessories the particular plate carrier has.
