QD (Quick-Detach) is a fast-attach / fast-release mounting system commonly used for weapon sling swivels, optics, and other firearm accessories.
Its main purpose is to enable rapid, tool-free attachment and removal, allowing the user to adapt the weapon setup immediately in dynamic or operational scenarios.
A typical QD sling swivel seats in a corresponding QD socket and is secured by a spring-loaded locking mechanism. Many swivels allow full 360° rotation, which improves sling ergonomics and prevents twisting. Some shooters, however, prefer non-rotating (limited-rotation) QD swivels for more consistent sling positioning.
If a firearm does not have an integrated QD socket, the system can be added using M-LOK, KeyMod, or Picatinny rail QD adapters, which provide a standardized mounting point for the swivel.
QD mounts are among the most widely used solutions for quick changes to weapon configurations in demanding conditions — for example when switching slings, removing an accessory, or reconfiguring a rifle for transport.
The abbreviation QD can also appear in load-bearing equipment: in this context it refers to quick-release systems on plate carriers, typically on the cummerbund or shoulder straps, allowing the user to doff the carrier rapidly in an emergency.
