Polycotton – synthetic cotton

The term "Polycotton" (or the Czechified "Polykoton") is a fabric that consists of both polyester (PES) and cotton. Its existence is not spontaneous or unnecessary, as it provides certain specific additional useful characteristics and features to regular cotton fibers. The ratio of these two materials varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, which then influences the specific properties of the product.

Polycotton Under the Microscope

This material was produced and put into practice in the twenty-first century, so it is certainly nothing too traditional like nylon and Paracord. Initially, this blend of regular cotton and polyester began to be used as an economical choice (with some better properties compared to natural cotton fiber) suitable for various home textiles, bedding covers, and similar items. However, due to its properties (and especially its strength), it soon found its way into the survival and bushcraft areas (where people appreciate the fabric's economy, practicality, and resilience).

The ratio of both materials can vary quite radically, but over the years, practice has shown that a ratio (and fabric) with a higher cotton content (up to about 65%) is considered the best, but one can also find a content as low as 15%, so it's essential to keep an eye on it. The lower the ratio, the higher the chance that the advantageous properties will not manifest.

Why Was Polycotton Created and Used?

Considering that people usually don't do anything in vain, the question arises: why was Polycotton created? Firstly, unlike regular and pure cotton, Polycotton does not stretch and shrink. After washing, the cotton fibers do not shrink, as they usually do, and remain in place, which keeps the structure of the fabric intact for a very long time. And since it is partly an artificial material, it reduces the demands on cleaning and washing detergents. It is also easier to dye (not to mention that the color remains the same for years) than traditional cotton.

The fabric is also very pleasant to the touch on the body (something like calico - a medium-weight fabric in plain weaves made from cotton or viscose yarn) and the more cotton, the more comfortable and breathable it is. Only the synthetic part usually hinders moisture from passing through. Polycotton may be thin, but it is very breathable and quite popular for a wide range of applications.

However, it's important to be careful with washing, as deviating by just a few degrees and not following the process can result in ruining Polycotton (washing it at temperatures above 40°C or ironing it fully can be enough to damage it).
